Troost-Ekong Says His Next Fight Is in the Boardroom, Not the Dugout
William Troost-Ekong has closed the door on coaching. The former Super Eagles captain, who retired from international football in December 2025 after a decade of service, says his ambition now runs through administration, not the touchline.
Speaking to Brila FM, Troost-Ekong addressed the question he says he's been asked repeatedly. "I have had so many people ask me about coaching the team. I'm not sure that is something that I really want to do. I think there also need to be players that think about going one level above that, whether it is going to be in the boardroom, whether it is going to be working with federations, with FIFA, with CAF, whether the NFF. I think that's probably where you can make the biggest change."
He's already begun studying football governance and administrative structures, with an eye on eventually working with the NFF, CAF, or FIFA.
Troost-Ekong leaves the international stage with 83 caps and a decorated résumé: Olympic bronze in 2016, AFCON bronze in 2019, and an AFCON silver medal in 2023, a tournament in which he captained the side and was named Best Player.
