Lagos prepares to welcome Africa's football stars for 2026 CAF Awards
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says the city is prepared to host Africa's top football stars for the 2026 CAF Awards, describing the event as another opportunity to showcase Lagos as a destination for major sporting events.
Speaking during preparations for the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu said hosting the CAF Awards would reinforce Lagos' growing reputation for staging international events while celebrating the continent's finest football achievements.
Nigeria secured the hosting rights after President Bola Tinubu approved the country's bid to stage both the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly and the 2026 CAF Awards. The decision was announced earlier this year following engagements between Nigerian officials and CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
The Eagle Online reported that Lagos is already positioning itself to receive football dignitaries, players, coaches and officials from across Africa as excitement builds ahead of the ceremony.
Hosting the awards is expected to strengthen Nigeria's profile within African football while providing economic benefits through tourism, hospitality and international media exposure. It also continues Lagos' recent push to attract high-profile sporting events to the state.
The CAF Awards recognise the continent's standout performers across men's and women's football, honouring players, coaches, clubs and national teams for their achievements over the previous year.
