Wrexham Beat Leeds 3-2. It Still Doesn't Prove They're Ready for the Championship
Wrexham didn't just hang around against Leeds United, they won. Kieffer Moore opened the scoring inside a minute, Bailey Cadamarteri restored the lead before halftime, and substitute Sam Smith settled it with five minutes left, as Phil Parkinson's side beat their Championship neighbors 3-2 in Tampa. Joel Piroe and Sean Longstaff dragged Leeds level twice, but Daniel Farke's side never led.
That result deserves credit. It doesn't settle the argument this fixture was supposed to test.
A preseason friendly, even one decided by a real scoreline, is not a reliable measure of what August and beyond will look like. Leeds fielded a squad split across two very different halves, mixing first-team regulars with academy players still finding their feet at this level. Wrexham, by contrast, have been building match fitness and rhythm for weeks, unbeaten through their US tour with wins over Manchester United and now Leeds. The conditions favored the team further along in its buildup.
None of that erases what Wrexham did. Beating a side that finished 14th in the Premier League last season, even a rotated one, is a result that will travel with them into the Championship. But there's a difference between a confidence-building summer win and proof that this squad can compete week to week against sides built for the second tier's physicality and schedule. Wrexham have shown they belong in the conversation. Whether they belong in the results column against Championship regulars is still an open question, and one preseason goal difference won't answer it.
