Craiova Didn't Lose to a Penalty Retake. They Lost to Themselves
Laurențiu Popescu saved Sandro Lima's penalty. Then he saved it again. Craiova still lost.
That's the sentence that should lead every account of what happened in Yerevan, because everything else, the retake, the VAR intervention, the walk to the penalty spot Lima made twice in the same five minutes, is detail. The result was decided by what Craiova couldn't do in between the two saves, not by what the officials did before either of them.
The facts first. Craiova traveled to face Ararat-Armenia in the second leg of their Europa League play-off round with the tie level at 1-1 from the first leg. According to Digisport, Craiova dominated the return fixture territorially, finishing with 22 shots to Ararat-Armenia's five. None of it mattered. In the second minute of stoppage time, defender Carlos Mora fouled Ararat-Armenia's Balanta inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot, a decision reported consistently by GOLAZO.ro, ProSport, and iAM Sport.
The penalty that wouldn't end
Lima stepped up. Popescu guessed the corner and parried it away, and on the rebound, Ukrainian full-back Ievgen Romanchuk cleared the ball out for a corner. Game over, Craiova survive, that should have been it. Instead, the referee was called to review the retake by VAR: Romanchuk had entered the penalty area before Lima made contact with the ball, an infringement on the rebound-clearing player rather than the goalkeeper. Under the laws of the game, that's a legitimate basis for an order to retake, and none of the outlets covering the match disputed the technical correctness of the call.
Lima retook it. Popescu saved it again, guessing right a second time. But this time the ball fell loose in the box, Lima reacted first, and Craiova's night ended somewhere in the 90+7 to 90+9 minute range, depending on which outlet's clock you trust, GOLAZO.ro and Digisport both place it at 90+8, ProSport at 90+9. Ararat-Armenia won 1-0, and 2-1 on aggregate, sending Craiova out of the Europa League and down into the Conference League league phase for the second straight season, a drop confirmed by GOLAZO.ro and iAM Sport.
Why the retake isn't the real story
It's tempting to frame this as a refereeing scandal because the optics support it: a goalkeeper does his job twice and still loses. But Romanchuk's early run into the box wasn't a marginal call invented to punish Craiova, it happened, VAR caught it, and the rule exists precisely to stop defending players gaining an advantage by encroaching before the kick is taken. The infringement was real. What wasn't inevitable was everything that came after it.
Craiova had a full 90 minutes plus a five-goal chance in stoppage time to close out a tie they were the better side in for most of the night. They gave up a needless foul in the box with the game basically won. And on the second penalty, with Popescu having already read Lima's intentions once, the defense in front of him still couldn't clear a loose ball inside the six-yard box. That's not refereeing. That's a team that dominated a match and then couldn't finish the job when it mattered most.
Popescu did everything a goalkeeper could be asked to do. His team didn't do enough behind him to make it count.
