South Africa's Jayden Adams Dies at 25, Weeks After His World Cup Debut

Jayden Adams died on Saturday, the South African Football Players Union confirmed, three weeks after helping South Africa reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the country's history. He was 25.
No cause of death has been released. Sports minister Gayton McKenzie asked the public and media to "exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation" while the matter remains unconfirmed.
Adams started South Africa's opening defeat to Mexico and the 1-1 draw with Czechia that followed, coming off the bench in the 1-0 win over South Korea that sent Bafana Bafana through the group. He was an unused substitute when Canada eliminated them in the round of 32 on June 28.
He played the Czechia match a day after his grandmother, Marianna, died. McKenzie said he had reached out to Adams at the time and received a response he called humble and appreciative, adding that the player's decision to wear the national jersey through that loss "speaks to a depth of character and professionalism well beyond his years."
The South African Football Players Union called his death "an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large."
Adams came through Stellenbosch's academy, becoming the club's first graduate to sign professionally in 2020. He joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025 and helped the club win the CAF Champions League this year, a medal he dedicated to his late Stellenbosch teammate Oshwin Andries, who was stabbed to death in 2023.
Football beyond the final whistle isn't a tagline. It's where the real game lives.
