Seattle's Disallowed Goal Didn't Cause a 5-1 Derby Loss. Seattle's Defending Did

Five minutes into Thursday's Cascadia Derby, Paul Rothrock buried a rebound off a spilled save from Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis, and the goal was chalked off for offside. It's easy to point at that moment and wonder what might have been. It's also beside the point. Seattle went on to lose 5-1, their worst home defeat in 17 MLS seasons and the most lopsided result in the fifty-year history of the rivalry, according to the Sounders' own historical breakdown of the loss from Sounder at Heart.

What actually happened after minute five

Portland took the lead in the 19th minute through Kevin Kelsy, who redirected a ball over the top from Jimer Fory past a diving Andrew Thomas, per the Sounders FC official match recap. From there, the Timbers simply kept scoring: Kelsy added a second, and Kamal Miller, Cole Bassett, and Alexander Aravena all found the net before Hassani Dotson pulled one back for Seattle in the 87th minute. Portland finished with 19 shots to Seattle's 12, and 10 shots on target to Seattle's 8, numbers that describe a team that controlled the game from front to back, not one that got a lucky break in the first half.

A disallowed goal in the fifth minute explains one moment. It doesn't explain conceding five times to a Portland side that had been winless in three matches coming in. If anything, the offside call is a convenient excuse for a home performance that unraveled defensively for the better part of ninety minutes.

Seattle now heads into a two-match road trip against Austin FC and the Philadelphia Union carrying real questions about their back line, not about VAR. A club with playoff ambitions doesn't get to point at one overturned goal after conceding five at home to its oldest rival.
