Premier League Chief Says Infantino Pressed FIFA’s ‘Self-Destruct Button’

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has launched a strong criticism of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, saying the organisation “pressed the self-destruct button” with its controversial plan to sell stakes in future World Cup commercial rights.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Masters described the proposal as a self-inflicted wound” and said FIFA should not be considering selling a stake in the World Cup. He argued that the tournament should be protected for future generations rather than treated as an investment asset.

The plan, which involved bringing private investors into FIFA’s commercial business, was eventually abandoned following strong opposition from football authorities. UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have all criticised the proposal and accused FIFA of a serious breach of trust.

The controversy has also increased pressure on Infantino ahead of FIFA’s presidential election in March 2027. The English FA has withdrawn its support for his re-election, while Masters said he hopes a unity candidate” can emerge to lead FIFA and push for reforms.

UEFA has also lost confidence in Infantino, adding to the growing divisions within world football.

With the election approaching, the pressure on the FIFA president is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The question now is whether Infantino can rebuild support or whether football’s leading organisations will unite behind a new candidate.
