Malawi Rout Egypt 4-1 to Extend Their WAFCON Dream Run
Malawi are two matches into WAFCON 2026 and two matches unbeaten against opposition they weren't supposed to trouble. After stunning Nigeria in their tournament opener, the Scorchers beat Egypt 4-1 on Saturday, a result Pan Africa Football described as further proof this Malawi side isn't a one-off story.
Rose Kadzere broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, sliding in to finish a pass from Temwa Chawinga and beat Egypt goalkeeper Maha Shehata. Faith Chinzimu doubled the lead from a rebound in first-half stoppage time, putting Egypt under pressure before the break. Egypt's Iman Hassan pulled one back for the Pharaohs, but the response came too late to change the shape of the game.
Egypt's afternoon got worse just after halftime, when defender Rose Alufandika was shown a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Chawinga made the extra player count, running in behind off another Kadzere ball over the top to head past Shehata for her third goal of the tournament, according to Pan Africa Football's match report.
The win puts Malawi in a strong position heading into the final group matchday, though the group isn't settled yet. The Scorchers face Zambia on Wednesday with top spot in Group C likely on the line. Egypt, all but eliminated, close out their group campaign against defending champions Nigeria.
