Equatorial Guinea Part Ways With Juan Micha After Three Straight AFCONs
The Equatoguinean Football Federation has ended Juan Micha Obiang's spell as national team coach, confirming the departure on August 12 even though his contract wasn't due to expire until August 14. FEGUIFUT said the call followed "a thorough technical, institutional and sporting evaluation" and that the decision not to renew was actually made back in June, according to Pan Africa Football.
Micha leaves as the most successful Nzalang Nacional coach since 2020, taking Equatorial Guinea to three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 2021, 2023 and 2025, including a quarterfinal run in Cameroon in 2021. He took charge in March 2021 after a brief stint with the U-17s.
The tenure wasn't without turbulence. In October 2025, Equatorial Guinea's players failed to travel for a World Cup qualifier against Malawi, and FEGUIFUT responded by banning Micha until December, only to reinstate him after senior players threatened to boycott the 2025 AFCON in protest.
FEGUIFUT now has just over a year to find a successor before 2027 AFCON qualifying opens in September. Equatorial Guinea land in Group E alongside DR Congo, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe, opening away to DR Congo before hosting Sierra Leone.
