Chawinga Sisters Sink Nigeria as Malawi Stun Champions on WAFCON Debut
Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga scored all of Malawi's goals as the Scorchers beat defending champions Nigeria 3-2 in Group C of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.
Temwa broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, chesting a ball over the top of Nigeria's defense around goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie before tapping into an empty net. Six minutes later, Tabitha doubled the lead, latching onto another ball over the top to finish low past an advancing Nnadozie.
Nigeria pulled a goal back through a Rasheedat Ajibade penalty after VAR confirmed a handball, but couldn't complete the comeback. With eight minutes of stoppage time still to play, Temwa restored the two-goal cushion, looping a finish over Nnadozie, before Uchenna Kanu grabbed a Nigeria consolation in the final seconds.
Nigeria now face Zambia on Saturday, needing to avoid defeat against a Copper Queens side that beat Egypt earlier the same day. Malawi face Egypt in the same round, with a win enough to confirm their place in the quarterfinals.
