Everton 2–0 Crystal Palace: Everton Deserved the Result

Everton’s 2–0 win over Crystal Palace creates the kind of debate that football statistics cannot settle on their own. Palace finished with the higher expected-goals figure, 2.04 compared with Everton’s 1.16, but Everton walked away with two goals, a clean sheet and three points. For me, Everton deserved the win because they executed better when it mattered.

That does not mean Palace played badly. In fact, the xG numbers provide a strong argument for anyone who believes the result flattered Everton. Palace created enough opportunities to make the match uncomfortable, and on another day they could have walked away wondering how they had lost.

But football does not award points for expected goals.

It rewards the team that puts the ball in the net and prevents the opponent from doing the same. Everton did both. Palace did neither well enough.

That is where the argument becomes more interesting than simply saying Everton were clinical. Clinical finishing is not an accident when it decides the result. A team still has to recognise the moments when an opportunity arrives, execute the final action and then defend its advantage. Everton did that across the match.

Palace's problem was not necessarily creating opportunities. It was failing to turn those opportunities into goals. The 2.04 xG figure makes that failure even more significant because it shows they had enough attacking opportunities to change the game.

Everton deserve credit for refusing to let those missed chances become their problem.

There is a temptation to use xG as a verdict rather than evidence. I think that is the wrong way to read this game. The number tells us Palace generated the better quality of chances overall. It does not tell us Palace deserved three points.

The scoreline tells us something else. Everton were more effective in both penalty areas.

That is why I would take the result seriously rather than call it undeserved. Palace can point to the chances they missed. Everton can point to the goals they scored.

In the end, Everton were not rewarded for having the prettier numbers. They were rewarded for doing the decisive things better.
