CAF Doubles WAFCON Winners' Prize to $2 Million Ahead of Morocco Tournament
CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe has confirmed the prize money for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations has been doubled, with this year's winners set to take home $2 million, up from $1 million at the last edition.
The announcement came at a media briefing in Sandton, Johannesburg on Wednesday, July 22. Motsepe framed the increase as part of CAF's broader strategy to build national teams capable of competing on the global stage.
The rise runs across the board for the expanded 16 team tournament. The total prize pool climbs 67 percent, from $3.475 million to $5.8 million. Runners up will earn $750,000, a 50 percent increase, while the payout for third place rises 43 percent. Every qualified team will also collect a $150,000 participation fee, up 20 percent from $125,000 at the previous edition.
CAF said the growth reflects a shift since the current administration took office in 2021, when the winner's prize stood at $200,000 and the total pool at $975,000. That puts the winner's payout up 900 percent and the overall pool up 495 percent over the period.
CAF said the extra funding is meant to ease pressure on national federations covering preparation camps, domestic development and player allowances. The tournament kicks off in Morocco on Sunday, July 26.
