Paul Okon-Engstler Set for Köln After World Cup Breakout With Australia

Certainty level: here we go. Paul Okon-Engstler will join 1. FC Köln from Sydney FC, with full agreement in place between all parties and Köln paying a €1 million fee, Fabrizio Romano reported on July 9. A medical and signing are scheduled for next week.

The World Cup run that made this happen

Okon-Engstler, 21, made his World Cup debut with Australia this summer as Tony Popovic's Socceroos reached the round of 32, and his performances on the tournament's biggest stage accelerated interest from Europe, Football360 reported. He made his senior Socceroos debut only in November 2025, against Venezuela.

Following in his father's footsteps, twice over

Okon-Engstler is the son of former Australian international Paul Okon, who played 28 times for the Socceroos and had his own career in Europe. The younger Okon-Engstler was born in Belgium while his father was playing for K.V. Oostende, moved to Australia as a one-year-old, then returned to Europe as a teenager, first with Club Brugge, then Benfica's academy, before eventually signing with Sydney FC on a three-year deal in July 2025. He'll now become the latest Socceroo to play in the Bundesliga, following Josh Kennedy, beIN Sports noted.

What he brings to Köln

Described by the Socceroos as a defensive midfielder known for his range of passing and ability to start attacks from deep, Okon-Engstler is eligible to represent Belgium and Cuba in addition to Australia through family ties, and holds Italian citizenship. Sydney FC will collect a fee of roughly €1 million for a player who only made his A-League debut a year ago.
